Are surfboards planing hulls or displacement hulls?

Tahini Raving Weirdo asked:

I am building a boat which is basically a platform on two surfboards with an outboard motor. I plan to put about 5 horsepower on that, and there will be no additional weight.
If surfboards plane, I reckon this will do 15 knots.
If they don’t though, I wouldn’t really be able to exceed hull speed, would I, and that would be pretty slow in this case.
So, what are they then?
Thanks.

Planing hull — flat bottom, no keel — should plane unless you put too much weight on it.

A planeing hull rides on the water. A displacement hull sinks into the water, hence the name displacement hull. Your new water toy will be a planeing hull. Good Luck, sounds like a cool idea.
